New
Zoom Wireless Access Point Provides Advanced Security
Boston, MA, March 13, 2001 -- Zoom Telephonics, Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM)
has begun shipping the ZoomAir AP11, an 802.11b wireless hardware
access point with both 64 and 128 bit encryption.
The ZoomAir AP11 (Model 4120) allows 802.11b wireless clients
to connect to a wired Ethernet network at speeds of up to
11 Mbps. The Model 4120 can also extend the range of a wireless
network by acting as a repeater. Distribution of AP11 access
points on a wired network will allow wireless clients to roam
in the coverage area created and retain all network access.
Wireless network clients communicate with the AP11 using
ZoomAir network interface cards or any other 802.11b DSSS
compatible product. The AP11's component 11 Mbps network interface
cards have been tested for 802.11b compatibility by the Wireless
Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) and are WiFi certified
as interoperable with devices from other manufacturers.
The ZoomAir AP11, ZoomAir Model 4100 and ZoomAir Model 4105
network interface cards provide encryption security at up
to 128 bits, which makes them suitable for use in business,
government and institutional installations. Users can select
either 64 bit or 128 bit security using Wired Equivalency
Privacy (WEP) encryption, the standard for 802.11b devices.
The 64 bit encryption level is normally sufficient for consumer
use, while 128 encryption is recommended for transmission
of confidential information by an organization . "The
ZoomAir AP11 demonstrates Zoom's continuing commitment to
a full line of products supporting the 802.11b wireless standard,"
said Frank Manning, Zoom's President. "We began shipping
products interoperable with the 802.11 standard over two years
ago, and wireless networking is an important part of Zoom's
Internet access and advanced networking strategies."
The ZoomAir AP11 Hardware Access Point is easily installed,
and can be managed using WebManage, a graphical user interface
embedded in the AP11. WebManage can be accessed by an authorized
administrator using any Web browser software running on any
computer connected to the network. The ZoomAir AP11
includes a detachable dipole antenna that provides coverage
to wireless clients within 1000 feet (305 meters) in an unobstructed
environment, or 300 feet (91.5 meters) in a typical indoor
office environment with modular workstations. Optional ZoomAir
omnidirectional and directional antennas can be used to extend
range. The estimated retail price of the ZoomAir AP11
is $400. About Zoom Telephonics Zoom
