Zoom®
PCI Cable Modem Earns Microsoft WHQL Certification
Boston, MA, November 3, 2000 -- Zoom Telephonics Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM),
today announced that the Zoom CableModem PCI has earned unqualified
Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) approval. The
approval is the first given to a production model of an internal
cable modem. This means that Zoom Telephonics makes the only
internal cable modem that has both WHQL approval and CableLabs®
Certification. The Zoom PCI cable modem is one of only
two internal cable modems to be CableLabs Certified. CableLabs
called its certification of these two internal PCI cable modems
"a major breakthrough." Passing the stringent
WHQL tests is important for a number of reasons. The certification
allows the Zoom product to display the "Designed for
Windows® Me, Windows® 98 and Windows® 2000 Professional"
logos on retail packages. The logos assure customers easy
plug-and-play installation when used with Windows operating
systems. The WHQL certification also means the Zoom cable
modem may be integrated into computers by manufacturers seeking
the valuable and highly marketable "Designed for Windows"
logo for their overall systems. Finally, some major service
providers require WHQL certification for internal cable modems
they market. CableLabs® (Cable Television Laboratories,
Inc.) is a non-profit research and development consortium
of cable television system operators representing North and
South America. CableLabs® certification ensures compliance
with the cable industry's strict performance and interoperability
standards known as DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface
Specification). "We are very pleased to be the
first cable modem manufacturer to offer a Microsoft WHQL approved
cable modem product," said Frank Manning, President of
Zoom Telephonics. "This certification facilitates integration
of broadband communications into Windows-based systems, including
Windows-based set top devices. The certification also emphasizes
Zoom's commitment to the cable industry, and our support for
cable modems used in a broad range of installations and applications."
